Holiday with your dog – Tips and advice.
Dogs are the most common pet with 39% of Australian households owning a dog. So, it is not uncommon to bring the family pooch away with you on holidays.
Pet friendly Holiday Homes are becoming more popular as holiday makers would like to bring the family dog with them.
So here are some tips and advice to help you and your dog have a safe and happy holiday.
Before you leave –
·
Do your research. Check out if the accommodation is pet friendly before you book. Make sure the accommodation is going to be suitable for your dog and that you are aware of the guidelines, such as can the dog be inside, is the property fenced or is there outside shelter. Some accommodation providers may ask for a pet bond.
·
Make sure your dog is up to date with vaccinations.
·
When packing let your pet in the room with you, don’t make a big deal about the suitcase just let him/her have a sniff. They most probably haven’t seen one in a long time.
·
Dogs can get car sick just like us, so it is a clever idea to test this before you leave.
·
When packing the car let the dog jump in so he/she knows that they are not going to be left behind.
·
Remember to pack their bed, food, lead, food/water bowls, pet waste bags and toys.
Starting the Journey –
·
Just like making sure your children are secure in child restraints and have food and drinks for the journey it is no different for your dog. Ensure your dog has a harness that fits into a seat belt.
·
Make regular stops along the way and allow the dog to have a stretch, snack and drink.
Your Arrival-
·
Best to arrive at your destination in daylight hours, this allows your dog to have a good sniff around and explore the new surroundings.
·
Make sure the yard is secure and that your dog can’t get out or lost.
During your stay –
·
Do not leave your dog on their own for extended periods of time, remember they are in a different environment and may bark and get stressed. They may also try and escape and do themselves some harm.
·
Take your dog for some exercise and always ensure the dog is on a lead. If you are taking you dog to the beach or park make sure they are in dog friendly areas.
·
Never leave your dog in the car.
Your Departure –
·
Ensure the property is clear of pet waste.
·
Have someone with the dog whilst the car is being packed so they know they are not going to be left behind.
·
Pack up your dog bed etc.
·
Restrain the dog in the car.
·
Have regular stops on the way home.
Your Home –
·
Just like you your pet will be tired after his/her holiday, a good soak in the tub and a feed will relax him/her.
